Step 4

Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

By far the most notorious and dreaded step of all is the 4th Step!

This step requires us to go back through the wreckage of our lives and actually write down the mess that we have experienced. Additionally, the fourth step also invites us to look at the good and positive highlights of the past.

Why do we have to go through this? Can’t we just move on from here and forget the past?

The problem with ignoring our past is that we will end up making the same mistakes again if we don’t understand our motives, patterns, fears, attitudes, and triggers. We need to evaluate where we came from to be able to overcome and conquer our troubles. Looking at them squarely is a healthy form of seeking the truth and preventing them from ever happening again.

I don’t understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate.
