Step 4

Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

By far the most notorious and dreaded step of all is the 4th Step!

This step requires us to go back through our lives and actually write down the our experiences and begin to evaluate ourselves. We begin a process of understanding our resentments, fears, characteristics, conduct and even sexual experiences.

Why do we have to go through this? Can’t we just move on from here and forget the past? The problem with ignoring our past is that we will end up making the same mistakes again (or switching addictions). The goal of recovery it to overcome our old motives, patterns, fears, attitudes, and triggers. We need to evaluate where we came from to be able to have victory over our behaviors.

Spiritual Connection

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
